Common Admission Test- CAT Exam Details and Syllabus
Common Admission Test is abbreviated as CAT which is an aptitude Test held only in INDIA. CAT exam is considered as the most popular, demanding and one of the toughest exam for MBA Entrance Exam as it is accepted by the best Institutes like IIMs (IIM Calcutta, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Lucknow, IIM Shillong ).
Eligibility for the appearing this exam is at least having a three year bachelor’s degree from a recognized University with 50% marks in graduation in any discipline.
IIM is considered to be the foremost business school of the country which conducts this test for selection of potential students for next level of admission process which includes personal interview and a group discussion round for MBA programs. Those who are appearing for graduation examination for final year is also eligible to appear for the exam. Last year around 2.0 Lakhs students have registered for CAT Exam.
About CAT Exam Pattern and Format :
CAT 2014 will be a computer based test.
Total number of Questions: 120
Time Duration: 170 minutes or 2 hours 50 minutes
Correct attempt: 3 marks for each correct answer
Incorrect attempt: Negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer.

- Data Interpretation
- Logical Reasoning
Common Admission Test – CAT Syllabus 2014 with PDF:
1) Verbal Ability-
This section is mainly used to test the vocabulary of the student and the general ability to understand English. This section of the paper has maximum scope for further enhancement .It includes:
Vocabulary Based, Sentence Correction, English Usage or Grammar, Fill in the blanks, Jumbled Paragraph, Cloze Passage, Meaning-Usage Match, Analogies, Summary Questions, Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension.
Vocabulary: This section analysis the knowledge of candidates for chief meanings of words, usage, secondary shades of meaning, idioms and phrases, related words etc.
Grammar: It test the candidate’s ability to spot and correct grammatical errors. It generally tests verb agreement, parallel construction, prepositions, use of modifiers, redundancy, use of articles, phrasal verbs etc.
Verbal Reasoning: This segment test the candidate’s ability to identify patterns within groups of words.
2) Logical Reasoning-
This section of the question paper tests the ability of the candidate to determine the truth or fact behind any conclusion based on certain rules. This segment includes:
Calendars, Number and Letter Series, Clocks, Venn Diagrams, Cubes, Logical Connectives, Seating Arrangement, Syllogism, Logical Sequence, Binary Logic, Logical Matching Blood Relations.
3) Data Interpretation-
This section is used to check the potential of the candidate to analyze or interpret a particular data which is a process of cleaning, modeling, inspecting of data. Data Interpretation consists of multiple facts and techniques .
Data are present in the form of tables, graphs or charts Venn Diagrams, Column Graphs, Line Charts, Bar Graphs, Pie Chart and Case lets.
4) Quantitative Ability-
This section of the paper deals with reasonable, tricky form of aptitude problems. This section basically test the candidates ability to deal with aptitude problems. It includes :
Number Systems, Percentages, LCM and HCF, Profit Loss and Discount, Simple Interest and Compound Interest, Time and Work, Speed, Time and Distance, Linear Equations, Averages, Ratio and Proportion, Quadratic Equations, Logarithm, Progressions (Sequences & Series), Complex Numbers, Binomial Theorem, Inequalities, Surds and Indices, Permutation and Combination , Probability , Mixtures and Alligations, Functions, Set Theory and Geometry.
Preparation Tips:
- Prepare a time table and allot time to each subject / topic .
- Clear you basic Mathematical Concepts and the best way to do that is to solve Class 10th and 12th Math problems or use some specific study material. Also try to remember as many formulas as possible. Learn formulas by writing and not mugging up as we tend to remember the written things for long.
- Solve lots of puzzles / quizzes to improve your reasoning and analytical skills.
- Increase your speed and accuracy. For this solve as many sample papers and take as many mock tests as possible and observe the time taken to solve each section.
