Marmagao or Mormugão is a city and a municipal council in South Goa district in the Indian state of Goa. It is Goa’s main port.It has an average elevation of 2 metres (7 feet). As of 2001 India census, Mormugão had a population of 97,085. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Mormugão has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 70%. In Mormugão, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Ever since it was accorded the status of a Major Port in 1963, the Mormugão port has contributed immensely to growth of maritime trade in India. It is the leading ore exporting port of India.The area is part of the Mormugão Lok Sabha constituency (also known as South Goa).Mormugão also elects an MLA to the Goa State Assembly.
Educational and training institutes i.e schools range from primary schools to technical and collegiate institutions. Goa University (1985), one of India’s premier post-secondary institutions, is located at Bambolim, near Panaji. The National Institute of Oceanography (1966), which is famous for its oceanographic research and for its expeditions to Antarctica, is located at Dona Paula, on the far western tip of Goa Island.
