TYPES OF CIRCUIT BREAKER OR SUBDIVISIONS OF CIRCUIT BREAKER

An automatically or manually operated switch is a circuit breaker, it is used for both controlling and protection of electrical power system.

There are various types of circuit breakers available according to their different criteria.

On the basis of :

(1 The arc quenching criteria the circuit breaker can be divided as

(1) The oil circuit breaker

(2) The air circuit breaker

(3) SF6 circuit breaker

(4) Vaccum circuit breaker

(2 On the basis of services provided by the circuit breaker :

(1) Outdoor circuit breaker

(2) Indoor circuit breaker

(3)On the basis of operating mechanism :

(1) Spring operated circuit breaker

(2) Pneumatic circuit breaker

(3) Hydrolic circuit breaker

(4) On the basis of level of installation :

(1) High voltage

(2) Medium vltage

(3) Low voltage

OIL CIRCUIT BREAKER:

Here the fixed contact and moving contact are immersed in an insulating oil as this has better insulating property. When there will be a separation of current carrying contacts the arc initialization will take place in this process it works and is the oldest type of circuit breaker.

Types of oil circuit breaker:-

There are two types of oil circuit breaker:

BOCB :- The bulk oil circuit breaker is a type of circuit breaker where the oil is used as arc quenching media and also as insulating media between current carrying constants and earthed of the breaker.
MOCB :- the Minimum oil circuit breaker is used as interrupting media and the oil is only present in the interrupting channel, due to this reason it is known as minimum oil circuit breaker.
AIR CIRCUIT BREAKER:

The air circuit breaker is a type of circuit breaker operating in air at an atmospheric pressure.

AIR CIRCUIT BREAKER are mainly of two types:-

1. Plane air circuit breaker

2. Air blast circuit breaker

Plane air circuit breaker: These employ high resistance interruption principle used in DC and AC circuit upto 12V.Principle of air circuit breaker are main contacts, arching contacts, arc rising in direction of arrow, arc getting split, arc splitter plates, current terminal, arc runners.
Air blast circuit breaker: In this type of circuit breaker the system voltage of 245KV and 420KV and even more can as per the speed of operation is required. Here there is no chance of fire hazards and arc quenching is faster with maintained stability of the system.
VACCUM CIRCUIT BREAKER:

It is a type of breaker was the arc quenching occur in vacuum. Basically applicable for the medium voltage. It consists of steel arc chamber in the centre in a ceramic insulator.
The vaccum pressure maintained inside is 10^-6 bar. It requires very less maintenance as compared to other circuit breaker.
SF6 CIRCUIT BREAKER:

This is a type of circuit breaker were the current contacts operate in sulphur hexafluoride of SF6 gas.
It has excellent insulating property and high electro negativity and has affinity of absorbing free electrons. It is based on the fundamental theory of free mobility of charged particle and is more efficient as compared to others.
