Industrial Engineering is a stream of engineering which helps to deal with optimization of complex system or process. This stream is concerned with the development, implementation and evaluation of integrated system of information, energy, materials, machines and people as well as mathematical, physical, and social sciences.The field of industrial engineering has many definitions given to it. For example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and technology (ABET) defines industrial engineering as—
“The profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.”
The American Institute of Industrial Engineers (AIIE) defines industrial engineering as—
“Concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, equipment and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems”.

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER’S PURPOSE:-
The industrial engineers analyze and evaluate methods of production and point out ways to improve them. They determine most effective ways to use the basic factors of production- information, energy, materials, machines and people.
CAREER PROSPECTS:-
Industrial engineering is also known as operation management, systems engineering, production engineering, manufacturing engineering or manufacturing systems engineering where industrial engineers work towards choosing machinery and equipments, industrial layout, organization of assembly line, quality control, distribution and inventory control etc.
They also work towards ensuring complete utilization of methods and schemes that is being designed by people and also they check each and every part of organisation that those are wholly involved in processes. In a factory an industrial engineers solve any problems which come up when a factory is making a product whish has been designed by designer. Developing control system to assist in financial planning, production planning and for physical distribution of goods and services are also done by industrial engineers. For system analysis and evaluation industrial engineers use computer simulation, especially discrete event simulation. Having good working conditions, intellectual challenging work and a high level of satisfaction make a successful career of industrial engineers.
FUTURE SCOPE:-
Industrial engineers can get job in almost all types of industries, private consultancy firms, R&D establishments of big companies or any manufacturing industries in private or public sector for the smooth functioning of their industrial automation units. For operating and maintaining purpose, production planning and control and materials management purpose industrial engineers are required. Various job options of industrial engineering are management consultant, operation manager, plat supervisor, health and safety manager, projects manager, production or manufacturing engineer, quality control manager, business system analyst. Opportunities in armed forces and railways open more options in this field.
CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION:-
- Solid background in mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus) and science (chemistry, physics). Must have passed 10+2 (higher secondary) examination with mathematics, physics, and chemistry with at least 45% marks for General candidates, 40% marks for SC / ST candidates and at least 30% marks in English for all.
- Must seat for (J.E.E.) Joint Entrance Examination.
