The big change: sectional timing
The most significant update this year is the introduction of sectional timing in both Tier 1 and Tier 2. This means you must complete each section within a fixed time and cannot move freely between sections as before. Tier 2 will also have three papers, including the Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer component. This shift rewards candidates who have practised each section under strict time limits.
SSC CGL selection process
The recruitment is conducted in two computer based tiers. Tier 1 is a screening test covering general intelligence and reasoning, general awareness, quantitative aptitude, and English comprehension. Tier 2 is more detailed and includes mathematical abilities, reasoning, English, general awareness, computer knowledge, and a data entry component for relevant posts. Document verification follows for shortlisted candidates.
Preparation plan for the new pattern
Adapt to sectional timing
Practise each section separately with a timer so that you build speed within the fixed limit. Do not let a hard question eat into the time meant for easier marks in the same section.
Strengthen your weak areas
Quantitative aptitude and reasoning reward daily practice. English improves with steady reading and grammar drills. General awareness needs short, regular current affairs revision rather than last minute cramming.
Take full length mocks
Attempt full mock tests every week in the run up to the Tier 1 exam. Analyse each mock to find where you lose time and marks, then correct those patterns before the next attempt.
Where to get expert coaching
A focused program with sectional practice and mentorship helps you adjust to the new timing rule quickly. Support from Plutus Academy for the best SSC coaching can provide structured test series, doubt clearing, and current affairs modules built for the latest pattern. You can also find vetted mentors through SSC tutors on The Hinduzone for personalised support.
For self study, a solid set of practice books listed on Examophobia study books can help you drill quantitative aptitude and reasoning effectively.
