The UPSC Civil Services Main Examination 2026 runs from 21 to 30 August, and the exam city intimation slip, the first official signal that the exam is close, is expected in the coming days. If you are among the 13,343 candidates shortlisted from the Prelims result, this is the point where preparation needs to shift from broad revision to a tight, exam ready routine.
What the Exam City Intimation Slip Actually Tells You
The exam city slip is not your admit card. It only confirms the city where your Mains centre will be located, released so that candidates travelling from another town or state can plan accommodation and travel early. The actual e admit card, with your roll number, exact venue and reporting time, follows closer to the exam date. Treat the city slip as a travel planning trigger, not a study milestone.
When It Usually Comes Out
Going by past UPSC cycles, the city intimation slip is typically released three to four weeks before the first paper. With Mains beginning August 21, candidates should start checking the UPSC online portal from the last week of July onward. Keep your registration ID and date of birth handy, since that is what you will need to retrieve it.
What to Do the Moment It Is Out
- Book train or flight tickets immediately if your allotted city is not your home city. Fares rise sharply closer to late August.
- Arrange stay at least two to three days in advance so you are not adjusting to a new city on exam morning.
- Cross check the city against your DAF entry. If there is a genuine mismatch, UPSC’s grievance window is your only route, so raise it early rather than close to the exam.
A One Month Prep Plan From Here
With a little over a month left, this is not the time for fresh topics. The plan that works best for most Mains candidates at this stage looks like this:
- Week 1: Finish any pending optional subject revision and consolidate your value added current affairs notes for GS II and GS III.
- Week 2: Full length answer writing practice, one GS paper a day, under strict time limits, followed by self evaluation against model structure.
- Week 3: Targeted revision of static portions you are weakest in, plus daily essay outline practice for at least twenty minutes.
- Week 4: Only revision. No new material. Sleep and travel logistics take priority once your city slip and admit card are in hand.
Common Mistakes to Avoid in This Window
The most frequent error candidates make in the final month is chasing new sources instead of strengthening command over what they have already read. A second common mistake is delaying travel bookings until the admit card, by which point city slip based tickets are already expensive or sold out. Keep your routine simple and protect your sleep schedule, since exam week performance depends more on consistency now than on additional content.
