The Union Public Service Commission has released its annual examination calendar for 2027, and it brings the single most important date for every serious aspirant. The UPSC CSE 2027 Preliminary Examination will be held on May 23, 2027, while the Civil Services Main Examination will begin on August 20, 2027 and continue for five days. If you are planning to write the exam in 2027 or 2028, your countdown officially starts today.

The calendar has been published on the official website, upsc.gov.in, along with schedules for other major examinations including NDA, CDS, Engineering Services and Combined Medical Services. Aspirants should always verify dates from the official PDF because the Commission occasionally revises schedules.
What Else the New Calendar Tells Us
Alongside the Civil Services schedule, the Commission has also opened its Online Recruitment Application window for direct recruitment posts under Advertisement No. 09/2026 and Special Advertisement No. 51/2026. Applications for these posts are open from July 25 to August 14, 2026 through the ORA portal only.
For candidates already in the 2026 cycle, remember that the UPSC CSE Mains 2026 begins on August 21, 2026. The new calendar does not change anything for you. Your job this month is revision, answer writing and the e-admit card.
Why May 23, 2027 Matters So Much
Counting from this week, you have roughly ten months to the 2027 Prelims. Toppers consistently say that ten to twelve months of structured preparation is enough for a first attempt, provided the plan is honest and the sources are limited. In other words, the calendar release is your official starting gun.
A Practical 10 Month Study Plan for UPSC CSE 2027
Phase 1, August to November 2026: Foundation. Complete NCERTs for History, Geography, Polity, Economy and Science. Read one standard reference per subject, for example Laxmikanth for Polity. Begin a daily newspaper habit and maintain a current affairs diary.
Phase 2, December 2026 to February 2027: Consolidation. Finish the entire GS syllabus once. Choose your optional subject and complete at least half of it. Start weekly sectional tests and revise current affairs monthly.
Phase 3, March to April 2027: Prelims mode. Join a full length test series, attempt one mock every three or four days, and revise your short notes twice. Solve at least ten years of previous year questions for both GS Paper 1 and CSAT.
Phase 4, May 2027: Final revision. No new sources. Only notes, maps, schemes, and mock analysis until exam day on May 23.
Planning for 2028 Instead?
If you are in the second or final year of college and targeting the 2028 attempt, use this year to finish NCERTs slowly, build the newspaper habit and explore optional subjects without pressure. Students who spread the foundation over a relaxed year typically dominate the intensive year that follows.

Even one answer a day from December builds the muscle that Mains demands. Finally, skipping mock analysis. The score matters less than the error log you build from it.
