Missed out in JoSAA or want an upgrade? The CSAB special rounds open for registration on July 28, 2026 at 10 AM, giving JEE Main qualified students a second chance at vacant seats in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. With JoSAA 2026 having closed after its fifth round on July 16, the Central Seat Allocation Board now takes over, and this is the last centralised window for these institutes this year.
CSAB Special Rounds 2026: Full Schedule
| Event | Dates |
|---|---|
| Vacant seat matrix display | July 28, 2026 |
| Registration, fee payment and choice filling | July 28, 10 AM to August 3, 10 AM |
| Mock allotment and choice locking | July 31 to August 5 |
| Special Round 1 allotment and reporting | August 6 to August 11 |
| Special Round 2 allotment and reporting | August 12 to August 17 |
The exact seat matrix for every institute, branch and category combination will be visible on csab.nic.in on July 28, before you submit your choices. Reports suggest a large pool of vacant seats across more than a hundred participating institutes this year, including newly added GFTIs, so even candidates with modest ranks should fill choices seriously.
Who Can Participate
Candidates who qualified JEE Main 2026 and meet the eligibility conditions can register, whether or not they participated in JoSAA. This includes students who never registered for JoSAA, those who registered but were not allotted a seat, those who withdrew, and in defined situations even those currently holding a seat who want a change under the rules in the official brochure. Read the brochure on the CSAB portal carefully before paying the special round fee, because the withdrawal and refund rules differ from JoSAA.
How to Register: Step by Step
First, log in on the CSAB portal with your JEE Main credentials. Second, pay the special round enrolment fee online. Third, study the vacant seat matrix for the branches you would genuinely join. Fourth, fill the widest sensible list of choices in true preference order. Fifth, review the mock allotment, adjust, and lock your choices before the deadline. An unlocked choice list is automatically locked at the deadline, but never leave it to chance.
Choice Filling Strategy That Actually Works
Do not chase brand alone. A core branch at a strong GFTI often beats a fringe branch at a saturated campus for placements and higher studies. Order choices by your honest interest, then by institute outcomes, and include enough backups so that a seat is secured. Remember that in special rounds the penalty for casual withdrawal is stiffer, so list only institutes you will actually join. Keep your class 10 and 12 certificates, JEE Main scorecard, category documents and photographs scanned and ready for online reporting.
Preparing for Another Attempt Instead?
If the vacant seat options do not match your goals, a focused drop year for JEE 2027 is a legitimate route that thousands choose successfully every year. Structured guidance matters more in a drop year than at any other time; explore mentor led programs at the best IIT JEE coaching institutes, which run dedicated dropper batches for the 2027 and 2028 cycles both offline and online. Class 11 and 12 students reading this should note the same platform covers foundation to advanced preparation for both JEE and NEET.

Key Mistakes to Avoid
Missing the August 3, 10 AM registration cutoff is the most common and most fatal error, because there is no late window. Filling only five or six dream choices is the second, since unallotted candidates in special rounds have no further centralised option for NIT system seats this year. Finally, do not ignore the mock allotment; it is your only rehearsal of how the real allotment will treat your list.
Bottom Line
CSAB special rounds are a genuine second door into the NIT, IIIT and GFTI system, not a consolation prize. The seat matrix goes live on July 28, registration runs only till August 3, and two allotment rounds complete by August 17. Set a reminder for 10 AM on July 28, keep your documents scanned, and fill your choices like your admission depends on it, because it does.
