It is not a stepping-stone to the civil services; instead, it commissions you as a Lieutenant in the Army, Sub-Lieutenant in the Navy, or Flying Officer in the Air Force straight after a three-year course at Khadakvasla, Ezhimala or Air Force Academy.

Roles and posting realities

Army officers lead platoons and companies in field units across the Himalayas, the deserts, and the hinterland. Postings rotate every two to three years between peace stations and operational areas; expect hard field postings in Siachen, Jammu & Kashmir, and the North-East. Navy officers serve on ships, submarines, or shore establishments, with sea postings lasting six to nine months at a stretch. Air Force officers fly fighter jets, helicopters or serve in technical ground branches; flying postings involve high physical demands and frequent relocations.

The lifestyle is disciplined: wake-up at 5 a.m., physical training, drills, academic classes, and evening sports. Weekend leaves are rare during training; once commissioned, officers get standard leave entitlements but must be ready for sudden call-outs. Career progression is predictable: Captain in seven years, Major in twelve, Lieutenant Colonel in eighteen.
