UGC-NET June 2026 re-exam
Last Updated: Aug 19, 2026
The Ministry of Education has ordered a re-examination of UGC-NET June 2026 papers in English, Commerce and Sociology after widespread errors were detected, prompting a complete overhaul of the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) examination processes.

| Subject | Re-exam Date | Shift |
|---|---|---|
| English | September 9, 2026 | First shift |
| Commerce | September 9, 2026 | Second shift |
| Sociology | September 10, 2026 | First shift |
What triggered the UGC-NET June 2026 re-exam?
The Ministry of Education directed NTA to re-conduct UGC-NET June 2026 examinations for English, Commerce and Sociology after an expert committee found extensive errors in the papers. The committee identified factual, typographical and translation errors, along with issues in question wording and repeated questions. NTA confirmed that the defects were too severe to be resolved through the answer-key challenge process alone.
Key reforms announced by the Education Ministry
Leadership and staff changes
The Ministry of Education has initiated significant reforms within NTA following the errors. Over 50 staff members have been removed from the agency, and 10 new professional leadership positions have been advertised and are being onboarded. These roles include specialized positions in technology, finance, cybersecurity, test security, research and development, and psychometrics.
Domain specialists and process overhaul
The government is bringing in domain specialists from the private sector to strengthen areas such as cybersecurity, psychometrics, and question-paper design. Education Minister Pralhad Joshi directed officials to ensure strict compliance with examination protocols and ordered a complete overhaul of the confidential operations (CONOPS) systems. This includes strengthening secluded rooms, air-gapped systems, and device-deposit protocols.
Audit and corrective measures
NTA has been directed to conduct a thorough audit of its examination processes and submit a report detailing the corrective measures taken. The agency is reviewing its internal processes at every stage, including setting, moderating, translating, and composing question papers, to prevent similar errors in the future and fix responsibility for lapses.
Impact on UGC-NET June 2026 results
The re-examination will not affect the result process for the other 84 UGC-NET subjects. NTA has clarified that the number of candidates qualifying and the subject-wise allocation for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor positions, and PhD eligibility in the three re-tested subjects will remain unchanged. Candidates appearing for the re-test will not have to pay an additional examination fee.
Understanding UGC-NET: Purpose and eligibility
UGC-NET is conducted by NTA to determine eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor positions, and PhD admissions. The June 2026 examination was held from June 22 to June 30, 2026, across 87 subjects. The re-examination for English, Commerce, and Sociology is scheduled for September 9 and 10, 2026, and will not require candidates to pay any additional fees.
