Indian politics

India has a multi-party system with a predominance of small regional parties. The Election Commission of India (ECI) requires political parties to register in order to contest local, state, or national elections. The ECI registers political parties that wish to contest elections, and if a party meets the necessary criteria, the ECI declares it a “National party” if it is registered in four or more states ¹. Alternatively, the ECI recognizes a party as a “State Party” if it doesn’t meet the national party criteria”[1]
