The term nanotechnology   is to refer to the ability to engineer materials precisely at the scale of nano meters. This is in fact its current meaning; ’engineer materials’  is usually taken to comprise the design, characterization, production and application of materials  and the scope has now-a- days widened to include devices and systems rather than just materials. Nano tech is said to be an exponential  technology because of its ability to reproduce its own means of production. It is a revolutionary, trans-formative  powerful, and potentially very  beneficial technology. Nanotechnology is a key technology for the future with a variety of potential applications and governments have invested billions of dollars in its research.

Future Prospect of Nanotechnology:

The future prospects of nanotechnology are very bright, as it directly concerns the quality, comfort and better health of the masses. Nanotechnology is still in a formative phase today – yet it is maturing rapidly. Government of India has allocated 100 crores for five years.  By 2015, products incorporating nanotechnology will contribute approximately $1 trillion to the global economy. About two million workers will be employed in nanotech industries, and three times that many will have supporting jobs. Over the next couple of decades, nanotech will evolve through four overlapping stages of industrial prototyping and early commercialization. During 2015-2020, the field will expand to include molecular nano systems–heterogeneous networks in which molecules and super molecular structures serve as distinct devices.  Computers and robots could be reduced to extraordinarily small sizes. Medical applications might be as ambitious as new types of genetic therapies and anti aging treatments. New interfaces linking people directly to electronics could change telecommunication.

What are the career areas?

Current applications of nanoscale science and technology, and thus career opportunities exist in areas  such as

  • Electronics/semiconductor industry
  • Materials science including textiles, polymers, packaging, among others
  • Auto and aerospace industries
  • Sporting goods
  • Biotechnology
  • Medical fields and pharmaceuticals
  • Environmental monitoring, control and remediation
  • Food science including quality control and packaging
  • Forensics
  • University and federal lab research
  • Military and national security
  • Energy capture and storage
  • And many more areas.

Eligibility for Career in Nanotechnology:

Nanoscale science is an interdisciplinary field-one where science and engineering intersect. Studying science or engineering and paying attention to the developments in nanoscience that advance these fields can provide you with a solid foundation for any broad range of careers.

The M.Tech in Nanotechnology can be pursued after completing their B.Tech degree in any of the following:

  • Mechanical
  • Biomedical
  • Chemical
  • Biotechnology
  • Electronics
  • Computer Science

Not everyone in nanotechnology will require a doctorate degree in science or engineering. A skilled workforce trained at a variety of levels is needed to meet the projected workforce challenge. Education levels include:

  • Technical program(a high school degree plus additional training)
  • Associate’s degree(2 years of college)
  • Bachelor’s degree(about 4 years of college total)
  • Master’s degree(about 6 years of college total)
  • Doctorate(about 9 years of college total)
  • Electronics
  • Computer Science
