Non-native English speakers pursuing study abroad must qualify exams like TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE to prove proficiency before university admission. Thousands of colleges across countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand require these scores to ensure students thrive in English-medium programs, avoiding future academic struggles. Indian applicants favor these tests for their standardized format assessing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE all assess core English skills—reading, writing, listening, and speaking—for study abroad admissions, focusing on practical communication rather than complex grammar rules. These tests build confidence to handle university lectures, assignments, and jobs effectively, ensuring non-native speakers succeed in English environments. While TOEFL emphasizes academic North American English through computer-based tasks, IELTS offers paper/computer choices with British influences and face-to-face speaking, and PTE delivers fully computerized AI-scored real-life scenarios—choose based on target universities’ preferences, your tech comfort, and result timelines.

PTE and IELTS tests are taken by the students who wish to pursue in English speaking countries. These are the general tests that people have to qualify in order to live and work in these countries. Students trying to pursue a degree from a foreign university need to overcome the obstacle of clearing the English language skills by taking any of the three examinations;

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

It is conducted by ETS (Educational Test System) and the result is accepted across the countries. The duration of exam may be 3 hours to 4 hours. This is a computer based test. The score range is 0-120. This score is valid for 2 years. The exam has different section include speaking, writing, reading and listening.

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

It is the test taken for study and work environment as it is available in two formats, IELTS Academic and IELTS general training. The test duration is 2 hours 45 minutes. This is a paper based test. Score range is 0-9 and this score is valid for 2 years. The different sections include speaking, writing, reading and listening.

  • PTE (Pearson Test of English)

It is a computer-based examination that checks a candidates English skills (read, listen, write) to immigrate or get admission in the foreign university. The test duration is 3 hours. This is a computer based test and score range is 10-90. This score is valid for 2 years. Different test sections include listening, reading and speaking & writing.

The three tests measure the non-native student’s ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend the English language.

Difference between the Tests

Though the tests examine the English skills of the people, it has some differences like;

  • IELTS is taken by students trying to immigrate to UK or Austria while TOEFL and PTE are inclined to the USA.
  • IELTS has a face-to-face interview with examiner while the other two requires answering through a microphone.
  • PTE is free of human intervention, but the other exams have human evaluators.

Students need to check the requirements posted for getting admission in a university or immigrating to a country to understand which test suits them best. We have mentioned the differences that help choose right one that suit your need.
