IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology. This is a group of autonomous engineering and managements institutes in India. Government has declared them as the “institutions of national importance”. There are 16 IITs in India. Among them IIT Kharagpur is the oldest one. The undergraduate and post graduate admissions in these colleges are done through IIT JEE and GATE respectively.

Here we have provided the details of the top 5 IITs for the admission in post graduate course through GATE. We have also provided the details of the NITs for the post graduate admission in it through GATE.

 College Details:-

1.       IIT, Bombay

This is located in Powai and is an autonomous university. It is the second oldest IITs in India being established in 1958 and is the largest national institute of Maharashtra. It was ranked as the 187^th best university in the world in 2010.

2.       IIT, Delhi

This college was established in 1963. Formerly it was known as College of Engineering and Technology, Delhi as it was established on 21 August 1961. Then in 1963 Parliament amended it to upgrade to IIT status. This is an autonomous university.

3.       IIT, Kharagpur

This is the first among the original five IITs which was established in 1951 by Government of India. It is regarded as one of the best engineering institution in India. It was established actually to train the scientists after India got independent in 1947. It is having the largest campus among all the IITs in India.

4.       IIT, Madras

This college was founded in 1959 with technical and financial assistance from Government of erstwhile West Germany. It is the third IIT among the original five IITs and is an autonomous institution. It is regarded as one of the finest institute of India.

5.       IIT, Kanpur

This was also founded in 1959 and from then it has grown itself so much that it is one of the finest institutes of India. It mainly focused on research in engineering and science. This college is approved by AICTE and is an autonomous institute. This is having the second largest campus among all IITs.
