How the exam works: three stages you cannot skip

Stage 1 – Preliminary written examination

General Ability Test (150 questions in 1½ hours) spans English, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography and Current Affairs. The paper is OMR-based; negative marking applies. General Ability Test

English (200 marks): grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and précis. Science (200 marks): Physics, Chemistry, Biology basics. General Science (100 marks): current developments in science and technology. History, Freedom Movement, Geography (200 marks): world and Indian geography, physical features, climate, resources. Current Affairs (100 marks): national and international events in the 12 months preceding the exam. The distribution is fixed; candidates who treat Current Affairs as an afterthought usually lose 20–30 marks in the last 20 questions.
