Police Jobs Description:

Qualification: 

Law enforcement certification boards set minimum requirements in order to get hired as a police officer in each individual state. Different departments, however, will have different educational requirements over and above the state minimums. A high school diploma or equivalent will always be required.

A thorough background check is performed and applicants with multiple traffic violations, drug offenses and other criminal offenses will often be rejected.

Selection Process:

The hiring process for different level of the position is different, and direct entry is also possible. The educational qualification required increase with recruitment’s for higher posts.

The Superintendents of Police (SP) are recruited every year by the UPSC by an extremely competitive exam and are appointed into the Indian Police Service. The IPS officers are then assigned to a state force. Every SP undergo probation period for 44 weeks. This training program also involves external abilities such as law and management. At the end of probation period, they go through an orientation training of few weeks at the assigned state’s police academy.

Pre-Hiring Tests:

Police officers take a series of tests before being accepted into the police academy. These tests  can include:

  •  Civil Service Aptitude Exam
  •  Physical exams
  •  Lie detector tests
  •  Drug tests
  •  Psychological tests

Physical Abilities:

The average age for applicants falls between the ages of 20 and 35. A series of physical tests are administered during the hiring process. This is to evaluate an applicant’s strength, endurance and dexterity. Examples of the tests includes timed push ups, sit ups, a 1.5-mile run, arm and leg endurance tests, a 75-yard pursuit run, a eye test and a side-step test.

Specialty Fields:

Specialty fields in the police department can include chemical and microscopic analysis, firearms training and instruction, handwriting and fingerprint identification.

Writing and Communication Skills:

Police officers are required to write records detailing the smallest details of any arrest, confrontation, questioning or any interaction with the public & criminals. Good writing and communication skills are important for later reference when prosecuting a case, determining insurance qualifications, or for investigative reference. The officer will also refer to the records if called to testify in court. Strong skills in this area prevent misinterpretation of the facts of a case.

In general, the job duties of police officers include:

  • Issuing traffic citations
  • Helping disabled motorists
  • Investigating minor crimes
  • Directing traffic
  • Making arrests
  • Investigating traffic crashes
  • Serving warrants
  • Providing court testimony
  • Providing first aid
  • Securing crime scenes
  • Identifying and protecting evidence
  • Writing reports
  • Responding to calls

Of course, there are a number of other duties that may be required of police officers in addition to those listed above. Aside from enforcing the law, the single most important role police officers serve is in helping other people.

Central Armed Police Forces: Following eight forces of the central government of India are includes in C.A.P.F:

Border Security Force: B.S.F is responsible to guarding Indian land borders during peace time and it also prevent trans border crimes from other countries.

Central Industrial Security Force: C.I.S.F is used to safe the industrial installations around the country and its also responsible for securing seaports and airports of the country.

Central Reserve Police Force: C.R.P.F is one of largest central police organization  in the world.Its responsible to help state and to maintaining laws.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police: I.T.B.P is the part of central police force,its responsible to secure Indo-Tibetan border which covered 2115 km area.

National Security Guards: N.S.G is a commando unit which is responsible to counter terrorism and for hostage rescue operations.

Railway Protection Force: R.P.F is the part of Indian Railways,which protect the Indian railway terms and help the passengers regarding their queries.

Special Protection Group: S.P.G is a unit of special executive commando’s which is responsible for the protection of Prime Minister of India and other government officials.

Sashastra Seema Bal: S.S.B protects Nepal and Bhutan borders from the various external and internal threats.

State Police:

Metropolitan Police: Major Indian cities like Delhi,Mumbai etc. have their own police force which follows the Police Commissionaire System.

Traffic Police: Traffic police also comes under the state police and responsible for managing traffic on the highway as well as in the cities.
