What is the UPSC CAPF (AC) 2027 exam?

The Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to recruit Assistant Commandants for India’s five central paramilitary forces: the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). These officers lead frontline units responsible for border guarding, counter-insurgency, internal security and disaster response across the country.

Unlike the Indian Administrative Service or Indian Police Service, CAPF officers spend their careers in uniformed organisations, commanding companies and battalions in theatres ranging from the Siachen Glacier to the Maoist-affected districts of Chhattisgarh. The role demands a blend of leadership, tactical acumen and crisis management—skills tested at every stage of the selection process.

Stages of the CAPF (AC) 2027 exam

Stage 1 – Preliminary examination

The prelims is a single objective-type paper of two hours. It covers general mental ability, general science, history of India, Indian polity, economy, geography, environment and current affairs. The paper is designed to filter candidates who can think quickly and accurately under time pressure; analytical questions on national security themes are increasingly common.

Stage 2 – Main examination

Mains consists of two compulsory papers. Paper I is an essay paper requiring two essays on topics drawn from security, governance and social issues. Paper II is a general studies paper focused on internal security, governance, international relations and technology. Both papers reward clear structure, factual precision and the ability to link current events to broader policy questions.

Stage 3 – Physical Standards, Physical Efficiency Tests and Medical Examination

Candidates who clear written mains must meet national physical standards for height, chest and weight. They then face a Physical Efficiency Test comprising a 100-metre sprint, 800-metre run, shot put and long jump. Medical standards are stringent; candidates with colour blindness, high myopia or other disqualifying conditions are excluded at this stage.

Stage 4 – Interview / Personality Test

The interview panel—typically three senior officers—assesses leadership potential, decision-making and domain knowledge. Questions probe a candidate’s views on AFSPA, recent border incidents, cyber threats to paramilitary forces and ethical dilemmas in counter-insurgency operations. Unlike civil service interviews, CAPF panels place heavier emphasis on operational scenarios and crisis response.

Vacancies and competition in CAPF (AC) 2027

Competition is keenest in the general category, where prelims cut-offs often exceed 120 marks and aggregate cut-offs approach 500. Reserved categories benefit from lower cut-offs, but the physical and medical hurdles reduce some of that advantage. Aspirants should therefore aim for a prelims score that comfortably exceeds the expected cut-off to cushion against paper variations.

Eligibility: who should consider CAPF (AC) 2027

The official notification sets out the precise age limits, educational qualifications and nationality requirements; candidates must verify these before applying. As a general guide, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university and be aged between 20 and 25 years on the first day of the month in which applications open (age relaxations apply to reserved categories as per government norms). The notification also specifies acceptable degrees and any additional requirements for reserved categories.

CAPF (AC) is attractive to graduates who seek a uniformed career without the long IAS probation. It is also a realistic alternative for candidates who narrowly miss the IAS prelims cut-off but possess the temperament for operational command. Women and candidates from reserved categories should weigh the physical standards and medical criteria carefully before committing.

Career path and postings after selection

Force Primary Role Typical Posting Profile
BSF Border guarding (India-Pakistan, India-Bangladesh) Company command on the Line of Control or Sundarbans border
CRPF Internal security and election duties Battalion command in Left-Wing Extremism affected districts
CISF Industrial security and VIP protection Unit command at airports, seaports or nuclear facilities
ITBP Border guarding (India-China) Postings in high-altitude areas of Ladakh and Uttarakhand
SSB Border guarding (India-Nepal, India-Bhutan) Company command in the Terai belt or North-East

After initial training, Assistant Commandants typically command a company of 120–150 personnel. Promotions follow a time-bound cadre review process, with selection-grade posts (Deputy Commandant) reached after 8–10 years. Senior ranks (Commandant and above) open opportunities in staff appointments, training institutions and higher field commands. The career offers rapid responsibility but demands sustained operational readiness and frequent postings.
