CSAB Special Rounds are the last official gateway to NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats after JoSAA counselling closes. With JoSAA Round 5, the final regular round, scheduled on 16 July 2026, the Central Seat Allocation Board will open special round registration on 28 July 2026 to fill seats that remain vacant. Every year thousands of JEE Main qualified students upgrade to a better branch or secure a seat they missed in JoSAA through these rounds, so understanding the process now can change your admission outcome.

This guide explains the CSAB Special Rounds schedule, who should register, how choice filling works and the mistakes that cost students real seats.

CSAB Special Rounds: Key Dates

  • Registration and fee payment open on 28 July 2026 and close on 3 August 2026 at 10 am.
  • Choice filling and locking remain available until 5 August 2026 at 2 pm.
  • Special Round 1 seat allotment will be declared on 6 August 2026 at 5 pm, with online reporting until 10 August 2026.
  • Special Round 2 seat allotment follows on 12 August 2026 at 5 pm, with reporting by 14 August 2026.
  • The entire process concludes by 18 August 2026 on the official portal at csab.nic.in.

Who Should Register for CSAB Special Rounds

  • Candidates who did not receive any seat in JoSAA rounds.
  • Candidates who received a JoSAA seat but want to try for a better branch or institute in the NIT plus system. Such candidates must follow the willingness rules carefully.
  • Candidates who missed JoSAA registration entirely but are JEE Main qualified and eligible; special rounds require fresh registration on the CSAB portal.

Note that IIT seats are not part of CSAB. Special rounds cover only NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.

How CSAB Choice Filling Works

  1. Register on the CSAB portal and pay the special round fee, which includes a processing charge and seat acceptance component.
  2. Fill choices afresh. JoSAA choices do not carry forward, and vacancy positions are different now.
  3. Study the displayed vacant seat matrix before ordering choices. Branch and institute combinations that looked impossible in JoSAA often appear in special rounds.
  4. Lock the list before the deadline. An unlocked list is auto locked, but relying on that is risky.

Mistakes That Cost Seats Every Year

  • Filling only a handful of dream choices and remaining unallotted while acceptable branches went to lower rankers.
  • Ignoring the willingness setting, which can either protect or release your existing JoSAA seat.
  • Missing the online reporting window after allotment, which forfeits the seat.
  • Paying fees at the last hour and getting stuck in payment failures.

If You Do Not Get a Seat This Year

A vacant seat in a far campus or an unwanted branch is not always better than a stronger attempt next year. Students of Class 11 and 12 aiming for JEE in 2027 or 2028, and droppers planning a focused year, can consider structured programs at Plutus STEM, rated as the best IIT JEE coaching online for the 2027 and 2028 batches, which also runs parallel NEET batches. Compare institutes, faculty and fees on a neutral platform such as The Hinduzone before you commit. Self study students can pick standard JEE books, coaching modules and test series material at discounted prices from Examophobia.

Documents to Keep Ready

  • JEE Main score card and admit card
  • Class 10 and Class 12 certificates and mark sheets
  • Category, PwD and other certificates in the prescribed format where applicable
  • Photo identity proof and passport size photographs
  • Fee payment proof and a working net banking or UPI option

Final Word

CSAB Special Rounds reward the prepared, not the lucky. Mark 28 July for registration, research the vacancy matrix before choice filling and complete every reporting step on time. Whether you upgrade, secure a fresh seat or decide to fight another year with a better rank, make it a decision you planned rather than one you drifted into.
