India’s First Visually Impaired IAS Officer Shatters Barriers by Cracking UPSC Twice
Passing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam in India is considered one of the toughest exams globally and someone who has done it always raises eyebrows but not anymore. When Pranjal Patil first attempted the UPSC exam in 2016, she scored an excellent All-India rank of 744. She had just taken her first step on the UPSC exam journey. Pranjal Patil was disappointed that she did not score well in the exam for the first time. So, she attempted it once again in 2017 and scored 124.
A Glimpse into Pranjal’s Early Life
Born in Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra, Pranjal has been way through huge life challenges from an early age. Born with limited vision, she lost all of it completely by the time she reached six years of age. Yet, she was never a broken spirit. She studied at the Kamla Mehta Dadar School for the Blind in Mumbai and developed an intense love for studying.
Pranjal’s educational background starts with being an alumnus of St. Xavier’s College after which she graduated in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi. Both M.Phil and Ph.D. were pursued from JNU. Showcasing her dedication to academics.
Preparation Strategies of Pranjal Patil
For study support, she utilized technology rather than traditional IAS tutoring. Using audio-book software, Pranjal reads textbooks and uses her listening abilities to absorb the information. This creative approach not only demonstrates her creativity but also her adaptability as a person.

In 2018, the very young Pranjal Patil made to the office of being an Assistant Collector in Ernakulam, Kerala, from her remarkable UPSC exam performance.
