Tragically, on March 31, 1991, his father passed away due to illness, leaving the entire family’s responsibility on his mother’s shoulders. Just two months after her husband’s death, Fatima made the heart-wrenching decision to send her children to the Kuttiyakkad Muslim Orphanage in Kozhikode. At the tender age of 11, Shihab, along with his 8-year-old sister Saharabi and 5-year-old sister Naseeba, was separated from his family. Despite the emotional turmoil, Shihab completed his 12th grade and pre-degree education while living in the orphanage.

After spending a decade in the orphanage, Shihab returned home and pursued his studies through distance education. Determined to secure a stable future, he took on various government exams and successfully passed 21 of them over the years. He also worked in various capacities, including as a peon in 2004, a railway ticket examiner, and a jail warden.

While preparing for the UPSC examination, Shihab faced significant challenges, including failures in his first two attempts.
