Who qualified in JEE Advanced 2026: A demographic shift
SC and ST candidates outperform general category
The most striking trend in JEE Advanced 2026 is the rise in qualification rates among SC and ST candidates. The SC qualification rate jumped by 9.8 percentage points to 50.16%, while the ST rate increased by 8.1 points to 42.14%. This means that for every two registered SC candidates, one qualified, compared to roughly two in five last year. For ST candidates, more than two in five qualified, up from one in three in the previous session.
The headcount confirms this growth: SC qualifiers rose by 3,357, and ST qualifiers by 1,371. Together, they account for 22,235 of the 56,880 qualifiers, nearly 39% of the total—up from 32% the previous year. This marks a significant shift, as both SC and ST qualification rates now exceed the general category rate of 39.8%, which fell by 3.2 points.
Women candidates reach a six-year high
Women candidates registered a 23.4% qualification rate in JEE Advanced 2026, the highest in six years. This represents a substantial improvement from 15% in 2016, with qualifiers more than doubling over the decade despite a 44% rise in registrations. In 2026, 43,112 women registered, 40,562 appeared, and 10,107 qualified. Women now make up nearly 18% of all qualifiers, up from 15.34% in 2018.
The top woman candidate scored 280 marks, securing All India Rank 77 with 101 in Mathematics, 86 in Physics, and 93 in Chemistry. This performance underscores the growing representation of women in the exam’s top ranks.
Admissions reveal evolving gender dynamics
Female-only seats and gender-neutral pool
In 2018, the IITs introduced 800 supernumerary seats for women, with women making up 15.34% of admitted candidates. By 2026, 3,814 female-only seats were allotted, and 37 women entered through the gender-neutral pool, bringing women’s share to 20.22% of 18,861 total seats. This is a marginal increase from 20.15% in the previous session, reflecting steady progress in gender representation.
Registration and qualification trends: A closer look
Marginal growth in overall qualifiers
The total number of qualifiers rose from 54,378 to 56,880, a 4.6% increase. However, the sharper change was in the composition of the qualifying pool. The overall qualification rate improved from 30.1% to 31.7% among those who appeared for both papers. This suggests that while the exam’s difficulty remained consistent, the demographic mix of qualifiers shifted significantly.
Registration and appearance patterns
A total of 1,87,389 candidates registered for JEE Advanced 2026, compared to 1,87,223 last year. Of these, 1,79,694 appeared for both papers, down slightly from 1,80,422 in the previous session. The marginal decline in appearances did not impact the qualification rate, which improved across key demographics.
What these trends mean for future aspirants
Opportunities for underrepresented groups
The rise in SC and ST qualification rates indicates that targeted interventions—such as reservation policies and support programs—are yielding results. Aspirants from these communities should leverage these trends while preparing for JEE Advanced, focusing on consistent performance across all subjects.
Focus on gender parity
While women’s qualification rate has improved, it remains lower than that of men. However, the introduction of female-only seats and the gender-neutral pool has helped increase women’s representation in admissions. Aspirants should be aware of these provisions and prepare accordingly, aiming for higher scores to secure top ranks.
