NEET UG is moving into its biggest format change in years. The Union Education Minister confirmed on 15 May 2026 that NEET UG will shift to a fully computer based test from the 2027 cycle, and the National Testing Agency has since confirmed the plan. Why NEET UG Is Moving to CBT Mode
The decision follows the paper leak controversy around the May 2026 NEET exam, which pushed the government to move away from the pen and paper OMR format. From 2027 onward, NEET UG will be conducted as a computer based test spread across six days at more than 1,000 centres nationwide, a structure designed to reduce the risk of a single paper being compromised.
What Changes and What Does Not
The exam continues to carry 720 marks with 180 compulsory questions, available in 13 languages, so the syllabus, marking scheme and overall difficulty level are not expected to change. What changes is the interface. Questions will appear on a screen and be navigated through a question palette. Answers will be selected using a mouse or keyboard instead of bubbling an OMR sheet, and a Mark for Review feature will let candidates flag questions and revisit them before final submission. Because the exam runs across six days at different centres, NTA is expected to apply a normalisation formula to ensure fairness across shifts, though the detailed methodology, shift timings and full city list have not been released yet.

How 2027 and 2028 Aspirants Should Prepare Differently
The content you need to master, physics, chemistry, botany and zoology from the NCERT syllabus, has not changed. What is new is exam temperament on a screen. Students who have only practised on paper should start solving full length mock tests on a computer interface well before the actual exam, so that navigating the question palette and using the Mark for Review feature feels automatic rather than a distraction on exam day.
Since the exam is spread across multiple days and shifts, students should also stop assuming every attempt sits the same paper on the same day. Build subject wise strength evenly rather than betting on a single easy shift, since normalisation will adjust for difficulty differences between shifts.
