Punjab State Civil Examination held in two parts: Preliminary and Main Examination.

Preliminary Competitive Examination

The Preliminary Examination consists of two papers. Paper-I General Studies and Paper –II CSAT. Paper 1 has 100 questions of 2 marks each and Paper 2 have 80 questions of 2.5 marks each. Marks obtained in the Preliminary Competitive Examination by the PCS candidates, are not be counted for determining their final result of merit. In PPCS Candidates equal to 13 times the total number of vacancies qualify for the Main Competitive Examination.

Main Examination

The main examination consists of written and interview test. The written test consists of 7 papers of conventional essay type in various subjects. Main Exam is of 1500 marks in total.
Structure of the Main Competitive Examination:
Paper 1: English is of 100 marks
Paper 2: Punjabi in Gurmukhi Script is of 100 marks
Paper 3: Essay can attempt in English, Hindi or Gurmukhi civil service aspirants have to write 3 short essays and this exam is of 150 marks.
Paper 4: General Studies Paper1- History, Geography, Society is of 250 marks.
Paper 5: General Studies Paper 2- Polity, Governance & IR is of 250 marks.
Paper 6: General Studies Paper 3- Economy, Statistics & Security issues is of 250 marks
Paper 7: General Studies Paper 4-Science-Tech, Env, Decision making is of 250 marks

Interview

The Interview Board comprising of the Chairman and Members of the Commission which may include an outside expert. Many Interview Boards may be set up to interview the aspirants who have cleared the civil service mains exam. In the event of an Interview Board not being headed by the Chairman of the Commission, the senior-most person is the Chairman of the Board. The carries the weight of 150 marks.
There is a total of 8 questions in the optional subjects. All questions have a weight of equal marks. Each paper will be divided into 2 parts. Part A and B, each part containing 4 questions. Civil Service candidate compulsory have to attempt 5 questions out of 8 questions,
The main competitive examination shall include compulsory and optional subjects and every candidate shall take all the compulsory subjects and two of the optional subjects, except for Ex-servicemen candidates, who are exempted from taking optional subjects.
Ex-servicemen category candidates are required to appear only in the Compulsory subjects, i.e., Paper I, II, III, IV & V. However, LDESM category candidates shall have to appear in all the papers, including optional subjects.
Candidates shall specify in their application form the optional subjects they desire to take. No
change in the choice of options will be permitted under any circumstances.
