Computer Based Test – Prelims (CBT-1)
CBT-1 is a 90-minute screening test of 100 multiple-choice questions divided into Mathematics (30), General Intelligence & Reasoning (30), and General Awareness (40). Each correct answer earns one mark; each incorrect answer costs 0.33 marks. A sectional cut-off of 25 % applies to each section for unreserved candidates; the cut-off is relaxed to 20 % for OBC and 22.5 % for SC/ST. Only candidates who clear all three sectional cut-offs advance to CBT-2; there is no interview or descriptive paper at this stage.
Computer Based Test – Mains (CBT-2)
CBT-2 is a 90-minute test of 120 questions: Mathematics (35), General Intelligence & Reasoning (35), and General Awareness (50). Again, one mark per correct answer and a 0.33 negative mark for every wrong attempt. The overall cut-off is set by the RRB after normalisation across multiple shifts. Only those who clear this stage are called for document verification and the final medical examination; the final merit list is drawn solely from CBT-2 marks.
Document Verification & Medical Examination
After the CBT-2 merit list is published, the RRB issues call letters for document verification. Candidates must produce original certificates for age, educational qualification, caste, EWS, and disability (if applicable). A panel of doctors then conducts the medical fitness test—vision, hearing, colour perception, and general health. Failure at this stage disqualifies the candidate regardless of CBT scores. There is no interview.
Quick orientation: what to study and how much time to give
RRB NTPC tests broad graduate-level knowledge rather than deep specialisation. Mathematics and Reasoning require daily practice of 45–60 minutes each; General Awareness needs 30 minutes of current-affairs reading and 15 minutes of static revision. Use standard NCERT textbooks for Mathematics up to Class X and Reasoning guides for banking/SSC exams. For General Awareness, follow a monthly magazine and a daily 10-minute exam updates on OurEducation. Do not chase coaching material; focus on solving previous years’ papers under timed conditions. Three full-length mocks per week in the final two months are enough to stabilise accuracy and speed.
