THE VERY POPULAR- MADRAS UNIVERSITY

Being educated one can very easily understand the need to study from a good Institution. When we are talking about our Career and Educational Qualifications we would always prefer such Educational Institutes which are well known for the quality of Education they offer. And when we are discussing about such Institutes then we would recall the names of some very good institutes and one of the very famous among them is the MADRAS UNIVERSITY.

Madras University was established in 1839. In January 1840, Mr. George Norton became its President and the University Board was constituted. After a lapse of 14 years, the Government of India published a systematic educational policy for India and as a sequel to this in 1857 by an act of legislative council of India the Madras University was established. The University was organised in the model of London University.

It would be right to say that Madras University is the mother of almost all the old Universities of southern India. The Madras University area of jurisdiction has been confined to three districts of Tamil Nadu in recent years. This has led to establishment of various universities in the State and demarcation of the University territories. This University has been growing from being good to become the best while widening its teaching and research activities.

The University of Madras progressed and expanded throughout the nineteenth century and now it has a wide span over the whole of South India and subsequently it has given birth to and nourished most of the Universities. Some of the very famous among them are Mysore University, Osmania University, Andhra University, Annamalai University, Travancore University which is presently Kerala University and many more.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has also declared the “Five star Status” to the University of Madras. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also given the status of “University with Potential for Excellence” to the University of Madras.

The main Organisation structure of Madras University comprises of the following units:

  • The Senate
  • The Syndicate
  • The Academic Council
  • The Faculties
  • The Finance Committee
  • The Board of Studies

The Madras University is well known for the quality of education they offer, moreover they imparts both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Education through the Affiliated Institutions which are spread over the districts of Chennai, Thrivallur and Kancheepuram. Apart from teaching theoretical papers, research activities in Arts, Humanities, Science, Management and Technology are the main portals at the University.

There are a number of institutions affiliated to Madras University which concentrate in research activities where Ph.D. course is also available in their respective field of specialization.

The Madras University is also famous for offering teaching and Research programmes in four different Campuses of Madras University. There are 68 University Departments of study and research are spread over in these four Campuses organised into 18 Schools each of which offer Post Graduate Courses in respective specialization, part time and full time Ph.D. courses, Diploma and Certificate Courses.

The University is well aware of the need for educating a large number of people in the country, so the University offers both under Graduate and Post Graduate education through the Institute of Distance Education of the University of Madras. The Institute is popularly called IDE of Madras University.

As far as M.B.A and M.C.A courses are concerned, these are well designed professional training courses for aspiring graduates in the respective specializations. Moreover this University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the five star rating first, and later with an A rating. And as mentioned above the UGC has already recognised the University as one of the centres for potential for excellence in the country.
