Madras University was established in 1839. In January 1840, Mr. George Norton became its President and the University Board was constituted. After a lapse of 14 years, the Government of India published a systematic educational policy for India and as a sequel to this in 1857 by an act of legislative council of India the Madras University was established. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has also declared the “Five star Status” to the University of Madras. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also given the status of “University with Potential for Excellence” to the University of Madras.

The Institute is popularly called IDE of Madras University.
As far as M.B.A and M.C.A courses are concerned, these are well designed professional training courses for aspiring graduates in the respective specializations. Moreover this University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the five star rating first, and later with an A rating. And as mentioned above the UGC has already recognised the University as one of the centres for potential for excellence in the country.
