UNESCO is an authority of the United Nations that looks over the preservation of historically relevant heritage sites. Currently, there are around 40 sites situated in India, we have tried to list the Top 10 that have captivated world tourists and served as a landmark in the development of the history of India. In a cultural as well as in expanding the heritage of the Country. The Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India are as follows:
1. AJANTA CAVES | Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India
Ajanta Caves are situated near the Waghora River in the state of Maharashtra. In the Ajanta Caves Complex around 30 caves have a lot of significance in Buddhist history. The sites have been known to serve the Buddhist priests in ancient times. They contain many Jataka texts that are considered holy by the Buddhists and make the place a very important landmark from ancient India. UNESCO declared Ajanta Caves as a world site in the year in 1983.
2. Ellora Caves | Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India
Ellora Caves consists of 34 monasteries and rock-cut temples built on basaltic rocks. It dates back to the 6th to the 12th century AD. The Ellora Caves have caves dedicated to all three religions namely Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. UNESCO declared Ellora Caves as a world site in the year in 1983.

3. Red Fort Complex | Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India
Red Fort Complex is in the National Capital of India. UNESCO declared it as a heritage site in 2007. Shah Jahan Constructed the Red Fort to fortify the Local Delhi nobility. It is a fusion of Timurid, Hindu, and Persian traditions that have created a style that is reminiscent of the Mughal period.
4. Taj Mahal | Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India
The Taj Mahal is one of the & wonders of the medieval period. The Monument signifies the architectural marvel that was achieved during the Mughal Period. Approximately 20,000 workers were involved in the making of the Taj Mahal. The building took around 20 years to be completed with the inclusion of the Gardens attached to it.
5. Jantar Mantar | Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India
In the early 18th century in Jaipur Jantar Mantar was built as one of the Best astronomical observation sites. The site was made by Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh II the ruler of Rajasthan. The Building is designed for the observation of astronomical positions and has been preserved well to observe all the astronomical phenomenons.
6. Sun Temple at Konarak | Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India
Sun Temple at Konark also known as Black Pagoda, is a Hindu temple built during the kingdom of Orissa from 1238 to 1250 in Konarak. King Narasingha Deva (1238-1264) built the temple complex marking a splendid period in Indian Architecture. The temple runs on the theme of the Sun god Surya running on down on his Chariots. UNESCO declared The Sun Temple as a World Heritage site in the year 1984.
7. Group of Monuments at Hampi | Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India
Hampi monuments are present in the state of Karnataka. Hampi served as the capital of the Vijaynagar empire and was the center of trade, culture, and a lot of business in medieval India. The structure is based on Granite monoliths and shows the intricacies of the art and culture of The Great Vijaynagar Empire. UNESCO declared The Group of Monuments at Hampi a site in 1986.
8. Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh Gaya | Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India
Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh Gaya is one of the oldest Buddhist temple complexes. UNESCO declared a world heritage site in 2002. The Complex has bricks covered with stucco material and the temple contains the “throne of Buddha” in the temple site. The stupas and shrines surround the temple complex.
9. Churches and Convents of Goa | Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India
UNESCO made the Churches and convents of Goa a World Heritage Site in 1986., There were around 60 structures but in the current times, only 7 of the original churches survive in Goa. Goa Served as the capital of the Portuguese when they traded in India and a lot of missionary activity happened in the region. The church served as the evangelization center for the Native population of the country.
10. Khajuraho Group of Monuments | Top 10 World Heritage Sites in India
The middle state of the country Madhya Pradesh has the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. The 20 temples are based on the Nagara style architecture that was constructed in the 11th to 12th centuries. The temple complexes contain Hindu as well as Jain temples of worship. UNESCO Declared the Khajuraho Groups of Monuments as Heritage Sites in the year 1986.
All these beautiful structures not only signify the various periods of the history of India. They also show the development of society through the lens of its heritage sites.
