Arunachal Pradesh attained its statehood on 20th February 1987. It is situated in the North-Eastern part of India with 83743 sq. kms area and has a long international border with Bhutan to the west (160 km), China to the north and north-east (1,080 km) and Myanmar to the east (440 km). It stretches from snow-capped mountains in the north to the plains of Brahmaputra valley in the south. Arunachal is the largest state area-wise in the north-east region, even larger than Assam which is the most populous.The northern border of Arunachal Pradesh follows  McMahon Line, border delineated in the Simla Accord that was signed by the United Kingdom and Tibetin 1914 but not by China that is as Tibet was not Chinese-controlled at  time. Both the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan) claim the northern portion of Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet

It is situated between latitude 26° 30′ N and 29° 30 ‘ N and longitude 91° 30′ E and 97° 30’ E. Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh and located at an altitude of 530 meters above MSL. It is named after Itafort meaning fort of bricks built in 14th century A.D.

Arunachal Pradesh, one of the “seven sister states” of the North East of India is a state with a big vision. The state’s educational scenario is slowly improving with the plans and projects initiated by the state as well as the central government. There are two universities in the state including one deemed university for higher learning and several recognized professional colleges. The state is a centre for carrying research works on Yak for which the National Research Centre on Yak (ICAR) has been established at Dirang.

A uniform structure of school education viz., the 10+2 system has been adopted by the schools in Arunachal Pradesh. The primary stage consists of classes I-V, the middle stage from classes VI-VIII and the Secondary Stage consists of Classes IX-X. The higher secondary stage consists of classes XI-XII. The state also provides free education to students up to the age of 14 to universalize elementary education in the state. There are several projects run by local NGOs to make people aware of the importance of education in remote areas. The state’s average literacy rate according to 2001 census report was 54.74%.
