Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2019 Analysis

The Civil Services examination is one of the prestigious examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in the country for recruitment in various posts of government of India which includes Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Forest Services (IFS).

The Exam is conducted in three phases

  1. A preliminary examination consisting of two papers
  • General Studies Paper I
  • General Studies Paper II also popularly known as Civil Service Aptitude Test or CSAT) which is qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.
  1. A main examination consisting of nine papers of conventional (essay) type, in which two papers are qualifying and only marks of seven are counted.
  2. Final stage is your personality test (Interview)

UPSC has conducted Civil Services Prelims Examination 2019 on 2nd of June. More than one lakh aspirants appeared in the examination this year to fill approximately 896 posts in which 39 vacancies are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disability Category. Candidates who appeared in the examination stated that the level of the examination was more difficult than the previous year.

Paper 1: General Studies Analysis:

The General Studies Paper 1 was conducted in offline mode and the format of the question was objective type. There was 1/3rd negative marking for every wrong answer. As per the discussion is done by the aspirants, the level of the examination was moderate to difficult. The cut off marks is expected to be 110-120. Paper 2: General Studies (CSAT) Analysis:

Do not underestimate CSAT (GS Paper 2) is what we have been suggesting students since implementation of  CSAT for civil services exam since its inception. CSAT Paper 2 has questions more from Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension. This paper was tricky and requires a lot of time to solve. The overall level of this paper was difficult. CSAT Paper 2 consists of 80 questions of 200 marks with 1/3rd negative marking for every wrong answer. Now, we will see the detailed analysis of this paper:

The aspirants who will qualify this paper will appear in mains examination. However, the candidates should know that the final merit list for mains examination will be made only according to General Studies Paper I and not the CSAT Paper 2 as it is of qualifying nature.
