The Indian Air Force (IAF) is a reputed and organized field of central government. Every year thousands of students aspire to get into the Indian Air force. But the increasing competition has not made every one’s dream come true. So with that thought here is an article, that could bring confidence among candidates to race the time once again. In this section we are providing the detail description of AFCAT exam ( entrance exam to get in to Air Force) , different training and courses and the syllabus content. About AFCAT : AFCAT stands for Air Force Common Admission test. The AFCAT exam is conducted by the INDIAN Air F orce for the selection of officers in three major branches which are as follows:
- Flying branch
- Technical branch
- Ground duty branch
Salary Offered / Pay and Allowances
- Flying Branch : Rs. 66,110
- Technical Branch : Rs. 57, 360
- Ground Duty Branches : Rs. 54,860
History : The AFCAT exam came into practice in the year 2011. Before this the exam was being conducted in an offline manner where candidates were applying for individual notifications. However this resulted in multiple applications from the same candidate. So to avoid it AFCAT exam was introduced by the Indian Air Force.

Selection Procedure : The candidates after getting selected in the AFCAT exam have to undergo interview from the AFSB, that is AIR FORCE SELECTION BOARD. The AFSB centres are present at Mysore, Varanasi, Dehradun.
After completion of the AFSB interviews the candidates can give further exams on their respective choice of branches. If a candidate opts for flying branch then he has to clear the PABT (pilot aptitude and battery test). And if the candidates opt for technical branch then they must clear the EKT, engineering knowledge test.
Training duration : The duration of training varies according to the courses. For the flying branch and the technical branch training is about one and a half years while for the ground duty branch the training is for about one year. The Training is carried out at the Air Force Academy Dundigal, Hyderabad.
During the training, the candidates are given the facility to travel by rail in AC three tire.
Eligibility Criteria
- Flying Branch
• Age: 19 to 23 years as on 01 July 2014
• Educational Qualifications: Graduates (Minimum three year degree course) in any discipline from a recognized University with minimum 60% marks in aggregate and have passed Maths and Physics at 10+2 level OR BE / B Tech degree (Four year course) from a recognized University with minimum 60% marks in aggregate.
Physical Standards
• Height and Weight: Minimum height : 162.5 cms with correlated weight,
Leg Length : Min – 99 cms. Max – 120 cms. Thigh Length : Max – 64 cms.
Sitting Height : Min – 81.5 cms. Max – 96 cms.
• Vision: (a) Minimum Visual Acuity 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in other, correctable to 6/6 only for hypermetropia. (b) Manifest Myopia – Nil. - Technical Branch
• Age: 18 to 28 years as on 01 July 2014
• Educational Qualifications: Aeronautical Engineer (Electrical), Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical)
Physical Standards
• Height and Weight: Minimum height :- Men – 157.5 Cms with correlated weight - Ground Duty Branch
AGE :Discipline Age limit Born Between ( Both dates Inclusives) Graduates 20-23yrs 02 July 1991 to 01 July 1994 Post Graduates 20-25yrs 02 July 1989 to 01 July 1994 LLB 20 yrs to 26yrs 02 July 1988 to 01 July 1994 M Ed/Ph D/ CA / ICWA 20 yrs to 27 years 02 July 1987 to 01 July 1994

Scheme of the Examination
- The AFCAT question paper contains 100 questions. Each questions containing of three marks.
- For each correct answer candidates will be awarded with three marks and for each wrong answer one mark will be deducted according to the negative marking scheme.
- The total time provided to solve all the 100 questions is two hours. Candidates will write the exam accordingly.
- The question paper will have questions from the following topics
AFCAT Syllabus
- General awareness : Includes History, Sports, Geography, Environment, Civics, Basic Science, Defence, Art, Culture, Current Affairs, Politics etc.
- Verbal ability in English: This portion covers the topics like Comprehension, Error detection, Sentence completion, Synonyms, Antonyms and Testing of vocabulary
- Numerical Ability : Includes Decimal Fraction, Simplification, Average, Profit and Loss, Percentage, Ratio and Proportion and Simple Interest
- Reasoning and Military Test: Verbal skills and Spatial ability
