Boiler Trouble causes(water and its industrial application)

Many commercial, manufacturing and industrial processes use water as a primary medium. These include the use of boilers and steam raising plant, cooling towers, cooling systems and other closed circuit systems. The water used in such systems, if left untreated can cause a number of problems leading to increased risks to safety and health and reduced efficiency. Due to this, the unwanted growth of harmful bacteria and biofilm occurs, the accumulation of scale (hardness salts), metallic corrosion, bio-fouling and the build-up of suspended solids. The correct treatment of such system water is therefore vital if these issues are to be effectively managed.

Boiler Water Treatment for Industrial & Process Applications A water boiler

Internal Structure of a boiler

Boiler:  Industrial and process applications uses industrial boiler water treatment and the management of steam boilers and boiler water systems. But there are some of the problems that can occur when steam boilers are used in industrial and process situations.

Steam: It is vaporized water which is partially gas and partially liquid. Steam itself is  made up with minute droplets of water in its liquid state, which gives it a white, cloudy appearance. In industrial and process situations, steam is often generated using water boilers that are heated to create steam under controlled conditions with the energy generated which is then transferred and used in many different ways.Steam is naturally produced by the heating of underground water by volcanic processes and is emitted from hot springs, geysers, fumaroles, and certain types of volcanoes. In several industries steam is used as a heat transfer medium including food, paper, process, chemical manufacture. In industry steam is produced by water boilers, which come in all shapes, sizes, types and pressures and the water within them. This makes the life of a water treatment specialist interesting having to deal with all the alternatives and know all the ways of treating those alternatives.

Use of boiler water:Steam which is  under pressure is at temperatures, greater than 100oC and therefore can be used to transfer energy to different parts of a system. This energy is  then  used to cook, create energy for chemical reactions, heat water and a myriad of other uses. Steam is “pure” water dissolves other materials into it very easily and other materials that cause problems requiring treatments. Materials such as metals from the system, oxygen and carbon dioxide can cause problem.

Problems that arise in boiler:There are several problems within a boiler system which require chemical treatment or other mechanical means to treat them. The major problems are:

  • Scale
  • Corrosion
  • Boiler Water Carryover
  • Sludge Deposition

These can cause problems in all parts of the system starting with the feed tank leading through the boiler then to  the condensate system. The problems arise from the quality of the water used within the steam raising system and the way in which the system is operated in the industry. In extreme cases, steam boilers can explode causing much damage and even death. So for this reason that strict standards have arisen on how to treat and maintain boilers and associated systems.

SOME OF THE RELATED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS :-

Q1. WHAT IS A BOILER?

Ans. A boiler is a closed vessel for heating water or any other fluid, which then exits the boiler to be used in various industrial processes like central heating, power generation ,sanitation and cooking.

Q2. WHAT IS BOILER WATER TREATMENT?

Ans. Boiler water treatment is a type of industrial water treatment which focuses on removal or chemical modification of substances potentially damaging to the boiler. Various types of treatment that are used at different locations of industry to avoid scale, corrosion, or foaming.

Q3. WHAT IS THE USE OF BOILER WATER?

Ans. Steam which is  under pressure produced by boiler is at temperatures, greater than 100oC and therefore can be used to transfer energy to different parts of a system.  Steam is “pure” water dissolves other materials into it very easily and other materials that cause problems requiring treatments.

Q4. WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS THAT ARISE IN BOILER?

Ans. Scale, Corrosion, Boiler Water Carryover and Sludge Deposition. In extreme cases, steam boilers can explode causing much damage and even death.
