Introduction to IIT JEE
The IIT-JEE was conducted for the first time in 1960, when it included four subjects along with an English language paper. The examination has evolved extensively from its initial pattern over the decades. IIT-JEE was initially called the Common Entrance Exam (CEE), and its creation coincided with the 1961 IIT Act that established the framework for these premier institutions. In 1997, IIT-JEE was conducted twice after the question paper was leaked at several centers, highlighting security concerns. Between 2000 and 2005, an additional screening test was introduced alongside the main examination to reduce pressure by allowing only around 20,000 top candidates to sit for the main paper out of more than 450,000 applicants, making the selection process more manageable and competitive.
In September 2005, a committee comprising directors of all IITs announced major changes to the examination format, which were implemented from 2006 onwards. The reformed examination consisted of a single objective test, replacing the earlier two-test system and simplifying the process significantly. Eligibility criteria were clearly defined – candidates in the general category needed to secure at least 60% aggregate marks in their Class 12 board exams from various educational boards of India.
Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Physically Disabled (PD) categories were required to secure at least 55% aggregate marks. These reforms aimed to streamline the selection process, reduce student burden, and maintain standardized eligibility requirements across different categories. The changes ensured representation for reserved categories through relaxed percentage criteria while maintaining the examination’s competitive standards.
