Time Allowed: 3 Hours

Maximum Marks: 100

Instructions: The question paper consists of 8 questions. The students are required to answer any 5, taking at least one question from each unit. Each question consists of 20 marks.

Unit One  Physics-1 sample paper 1st semester

a) Explain the construction set up and the principle for the formation of Newton’s Rings. Also what is the difference observed by using white light, in place of monochromatic light.                            (10)

b) Explain the concept of Interference of Light. If a thin plate is introduced in the path of beam of light for a Michelson Interferometer, it is observed that 35 bands have crossed the line of observation. Determine the thickness of the plate, if wavelength of light used is 5890 A.            (10)

a) Explain with the help of a diagram, the principle, construction and action of a Nicol’s Prism.  (10)

b) Describe the functioning of a Quater Wave Plate and Half Wave Plate in polarization.           (10)

b) What are the characteristics of a Laser Light.                                                                          (5)

c) Explain the construction and working principle of a Helium-Neon Laser using a diagram.        (10)

a) What are optical fiber. Explain the difference between various modes of optical fiber.           (12)
