PROPERTIES AND USES OF POLY ACRYLONITRILE

An organic polymer resin , synthetic in nature and having a linear formula (C3H3N)n is termed as poly acrylonitrile ( PAN) . It is formed when Vinyl Cyanide undergoes addition polymerisation .

Poly acrylonitrile is versatile in nature and is used to produce a large variety of products like hollow fibres for reverse osmosis , fibres for textiles etc . Since PAN softens below its thermal degradation , processing of poly acrylonitrile must be done by wet or dry spinning rather than melt spinning . Acrylonitrile acts as the main raw material for the production of acrylic fibres. Their are various methods for its produstion but one chemical method is when hydrogen cyanide is treated with acetylene ( acetylene + hydrogen cyanide -> acrilonitrile ) . The main applications of PAN are :

1> It is used to make knitted clothes like socks , sweaters etc because PAA acts as a very good fibre at a certain temperature .

2>It is also used as fibres in reinforced concrete , sails for yachts etc .

The main properties of poly acrylonitrile are : 1>The melting temperature of PAN is 317 degree Celsius                                                             2>The molecular weight of repeat unit of PAN is 53.06 g/cm3 and its amorphous density is 1.184 g/cm3.

3> As because PAN when exposed to temperature above 175 degree Celsius gets discoloured , it shows that it has a very good thermal stability .

4> It also protects products from attack of insects as because insects , moths and mildew never attack Acryic .

Poly acrylonitrile acts as a component repeat unit in various copolymers like styrene-acrylonitrile        ( SAN)  and  ABS ( acrylonitrile butadienestyrene) plastics .
