The Estimates Committee of the Parliament suggested the set up of a Service Selection Commission SSC in its 47th report( during 1967-68) for conducting examinations for appointment of candidates to lower level  of posts.

On 4 November 1975, in the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms,  Government of India framed  a Commission called the Subordinate Services Commission.  Later On 26 September 1977, Subordinate Services Commission  was renamed as Staff Selection Commission.

The  major functions of the  S.S.C. Staff Selection Commission were redefined by the  Indian Government  through Public Grievances and Pensions,Ministry of Personnel on  21st May 1999. Then the new   functions and constitution of the Staff Selection Commission came into effect from 1st of June 1999.

Functions:

• To conduct  several examinations and interviews to make recruitment to Group “C” and Group “D” posts for the various Ministries and Departments of the  Indian Government.

(SSC does not make any selection for states. It serves only central government.)

Office:
