UPSC CAPF (AC) 2027: who it recruits and what the job entails

The UPSC CAPF (AC) 2027 examination is the gateway to the Assistant Commandant cadre in India’s five Central Armed Police Forces—BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB. These forces are responsible for guarding borders, protecting vital installations, counter-insurgency operations and maintaining internal security. Unlike the Indian Administrative Service or Indian Police Service, Assistant Commandants lead operational units directly; they command companies of 120–150 personnel, plan patrols, manage crises and interface with civil authorities during law-and-order breakdowns. The role demands a mix of tactical leadership, crisis management and administrative oversight—skills tested across three stages: prelims, mains and interview.

The exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission and follows the same calendar as the Civil Services Examination, but with a syllabus tailored to paramilitary operations rather than district governance. The first written stage is scheduled for 4 July 2027, with the notification expected around February 2027 and the application window opening shortly after. The entire process, from application to final posting, can span five to seven months depending on medical and physical verification.

Three stages, three skill sets: a quick map

Stage 1 – Written Prelims (4 July 2027)

It tests general ability, comprehension, elementary mathematics and current security affairs. The paper is designed to filter candidates who can interpret graphs, recall constitutional provisions and read security bulletins under time pressure. A score above the cut-off secures entry to the mains, but does not guarantee selection.

Stage 2 – Written Mains (dates TBA)

The mains are less about rote memory and more about clarity of thought, logical flow and the ability to distil complex issues into concise prose under exam conditions.

Stage 3 – Physical, Medical and Personality Assessment

Candidates who clear the written mains must next meet the prescribed physical standards—height, chest expansion and eyesight—followed by a detailed medical examination. Those who qualify physically proceed to the interview, a 250-mark assessment of leadership potential, problem-solving under simulated stress and communication skills. The interview board places heavy emphasis on the candidate’s grasp of recent security developments and willingness to command armed units in remote theatres.

How many posts are on offer—and how crowded is the field?

The number of vacancies for Assistant Commandant posts is published only in the official notification released around February 2027. In recent cycles the figure has ranged from 150 to 300 posts spread across BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB. The applicant-to-vacancy ratio has typically been around 1:200, meaning roughly 30,000 to 60,000 candidates compete for each advertised post. These numbers can shift with government manpower decisions; the only authoritative source is the notification once it appears.

Candidates should treat the vacancy count as a moving target and avoid basing preparation timelines on last year’s figures. The competition is intense, but the written cut-offs are generally lower than in the Civil Services Examination, making CAPF (AC) a realistic second-choice option for many aspirants who narrowly miss the CSE cut-off.

Who can apply—and who should think twice

Nationality

A candidate must be either an Indian citizen or, in limited circumstances, a subject of Nepal or Bhutan with UPSC approval. The notification will specify any additional nationality clauses.

Age limit

The age limits, including relaxations for reserved categories, are set out in the official notification expected in February 2027. Candidates should verify the exact cut-offs before applying, as UPSC occasionally adjusts the bands.

Educational qualification

The minimum qualification is a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university. There is no restriction on the stream; engineers, arts graduates and science postgraduates all compete on equal terms.

Candidates in the final year of their degree can apply provisionally, but must produce proof of passing before the mains stage. Those who fail to submit valid documents are disqualified.

Preliminary Examination

• General Ability and Comprehension (125 marks) – Comprehension passages, logical reasoning, basic numeracy, data interpretation and mental-ability tests.
• General Studies, Current Affairs and Elementary Mathematics (125 marks) – Indian polity and constitution, Indian and world history, physical geography, economic development, science and technology, and elementary mathematics up to Class X level.

Main Examination

• Paper I – Essay, précis and comprehension (200 marks) – Essay writing on security, governance and analytical topics; précis writing; comprehension passages with short-answer questions.
