Delhi has more than 370 registered and non registered coachings in different languages from different faculties. Different coachings charge different fee structure but average fee for GS that is general studies is Rs 1,20,000- Rs 1,50,000 and in few cases its Rs 90,000 as well and this seems to be prime expenditure although its not true.

Preparation for optional paper varies from Rs 20000 to Rs 50000 again depending on subject and fee from different teachers

Average room rent for a room in Mukherjee Nagar is Rs 8000 per month and if you need single room where you can study as per your time line will cost you not less than Rs 15000 at any part of Delhi where coachings are in large number.

During one year preparation this becomes Rs  Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,80,000

Fooding cost : Coaching hubs have lunh or tiffin system where vendor gives lunch box for Rs 50 to Rs 75 per meal and in some cases Rs 100.

No matter which one will take for yourself , food quality after initial 7 days will all be same. You will not like to eat that food but you do not have any other option because you can not order everyday from Zomato or Swiggy. This part teaches you patience.

With extra expenditure on milk and few other protein or fat , your monthly food bill willbe between Rs 5000 to Rs 7000 . this comes to be about Rs 70000 to Rs 85000 yearly

Stationary cost :

Rs 3000 extra every month for Books , preparation materials, current affairs handouts , ebook notes of different coachings test series photocopy , note books , pen , photocopy notes

5. Miscellaneous expenses

A students preparing for a coaching looses his opportunity cost and travelling expenses . Monthly pocket expense for a students after these expenses should be between Rs 4000 to Rs 5000 after paying all above bills. This is another Rs 50000

If you add all above five factors average cost of preparation for IAS exam will come to Rs 3,50,000 for peaceful preparation with coaching. Although many students avoid coachings and in that case coaching fee can be or should be reduced from this expenditure lot.
