Government polytechnic college was established by the Punjab Govt in the year 1996 as a co-educational institute. Initially, Government polytechnic college has two diploma courses were started during the same year in the two important streams of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering with an intake of 40 students in each trade. Later on, Government polytechnic college started not only were two new courses of Electronics & Communication Engineering and Computer Engineering

Govt. Polytechnic College, Amritsar is the oldest Institute providing polytechnic degree .The Institute was established in 1965 with two branches of engineering i.e Mechanical Engg.& Electrical Engg.
