Are we Really Good Indian Citizen?

A nagging question has always bothered me why aren’t we Indians better citizens? I’ve often felt disheartened and embarrassed to admit that we fall short of being the responsible citizens we should be To support my views I would like to begin with the politics first. We say we live in a democratic country which means leaders are to be chosen by public votes. And when leaders are chosen by a majority and then any undesirable thing happens we directly and very casually blame them.

We expect the government to do everything for us while our contribution is totally nil. We often blame leaders after they have been chosen because we tend to overlook our own role in selecting them. Instead of taking responsibility for our choices, we shift the blame to the leaders themselves. Instead of taking action to create positive change, we often retreat to our comfort zones with our families and wait for someone else to come along and fix the problems. We gaze out at distant lands, expecting a magical solution to arrive, courtesy of a messianic figure waving a wand.

We always look up the pressure around us, without thinking about the solution. We blame the government for unemployment, hikes in prices, non-management wastes, illiteracy, and so many other things. We expect the government to be aware of our problem and expect them to find a solution. My only question to all of you is “Are we really a good Indian Citizen ? “.

Reservation system

Say No to the Reservation System!!

Small Action for  A Better Nation

Similarly, if we look towards our duty to keep our surroundings clean. We throw away waste materials haphazardly and expect the government to clean up the garbage. There are so many other small things by which we can help our system to be good and reach to satisfactory level. For example, by helping the needy, taking care of the poor people, by paying taxes at the right time we can do our bit. Just like business requires innovation and the ability to respond to change, so do communities and nations. So we must make it grow and work efficiently.

We must question and debate how to improve society and change inefficient or unjust systems. Parents, educators, and leaders can instill patriotism and national commitment in kids and youth. Let’s encourage the youth to take responsibility, lead, and tackle tomorrow’s challenges. Please feel free to write your views/opinions in the comment section.

I think in reality, what we see are far from the norms that requires for the democracy to function in an effective way. First is the press – In India the media is free and speak whatever they feel fit and proper but no right comes without responsibility. It’s the duty of the media to create well-informed and enlightened citizen but it has failed in its duties a lot of time. Then it is Free and fair elections – but it is nothing more than a jargon. Third and most important is the Responsible citizen – the citizens of a democracy should be well aware of their rights and responsibilities and are supposed to act and behave accordingly. But here, are we really responsible citizen of India? How much we are concerned about our duty to take part in the elections? Mostly we finish all our duty with a single statement like ‘all politicians are corrupt’, ‘that the system is not working’. We hardly try to look inside these statements and try to do something for its betterment. Honestly, I am very much part of this “we”. So, if democracy is not working in India, then we are as much responsible as the Government is. We cannot deny our irresponsible behavior towards our motherland.

I differ a bit on the opinions presented by our friend Mayank here. I was introduced to the word ‘democracy’ in my civics class a long time back. After that, I have learned practically what democracy is and how to make the best use of it. As citizens of one of world’s biggest democracies, India, most of us use our rights to the fullest. Do we stop it there? Sometimes, we tend to go overboard and abuse our rights. I guess we are living in one of the few countries where even a common man criticizes prime minister publicly without any fears. This kind of freedom is not enjoyed by many of the people in this world democracy in India is about freedom and that we enjoy in our motherland. Of course many other countries in this world enjoy better facilities, sophistication and luxurious life, but even after all that, I feel the kind of freedom that we have in India cannot be matched by any country.

Controversial indeed.. if we say YES then how and when NO then how?
For the YES portion, I can conform with the fact that we contribute towards the national development and assist in spreading awareness among the masses concerning the various social evils. We are good citizens because we know how to raise our children, teach them our ancestral moral values and make them responsible. We know how to nurture our wards and help in maintaining a social decorum. We have patriotism in our ideology and are proud of our country.
For the NO part, I agree that gender biasing, reservation, appraisal to black money and corruption, dowry system, eve teasing, rapes, thefts, etc. are the factors that do not put up a crystal clear image of the nation before us and the others as well.
We need to improve upon and review on the policies we follow, the law which we abide to and the governing system we implement.
A wrong decision, a biased judgement leads to repenting over the same for an unimaginable term.
We have forgotten our culture in many aspects and acquired the ill-influence of the western one that is slowly brisking away the firm social foundation our ancestors built for the generations to come.

According to my point of view yes we are. sky is the limit for people to come up and the available opportunities can be properly utilized instead of expecting everything from the government. The real hapiness is derived from what we give to others and not from what we get from others. If we take a family, you know how it is managed by the parents despite all difficulties. Similarly the government has to manage the entire affairs for different states. Always plus & minus will be there. Every Indian is part of the whole system.Life is to struggle and not a bed of rose. Struggling gives more maturity to people.

When you say we , I do not know about whom you are speaking.

I can only speak about myself , and I am fairly sure that I am not part of the ‘we’ that you speak of.

First and foremost , in any organization , responsibility comes to those who are willing to shoulder it. It is very rare that responsibility is thrust on an unwilling individual.

Today , our government consists of individuals who have made politics their life ; in such a situation , are we not correct in demanding that they give their best ? After all , they wanted to be leaders , and believing them , we have made them our leaders. What have they done with the power and responsibility that has been given to them ?

99 % of India’s ills are due to the government ; each individual citizen is certainly responsible to do something , but to blame this country’s problems on each and every citizen is like blaming a family’s problems on the children instead of the parents.

Yes , Indians don’t spit abroad ; the reason is not out of patriotism or shame ; the reason is law enforcement. Indians don’t try bribing policemen abroad because they’ll be arrested and put behind bars.

In foreign countries laws are strictly enforced ; even Prince Harry has been booked for drunken driving ! Why has the government not been able to do this in India ? Is the common man to be blamed for this ?

Give credit where credit is due ; I would say the common Indian is a very admirable soul , given the injustice and misery that is part of his every day life.

Go to some African countries or some of the Arab countries , and then you will see that India is a wonderful country. The pity is that we like flagellating ourselves – “ghar ka murgi dal barabar” !

There are many Indian citizen that do their work to improve the India in a better way. But many people are still unaware or do wrong things which will effect the Indian society.we are true and good Indian citizen only when we do all that things which our government required and our constituion say to us. we should follow all the law of our country and make it crime free and respect our flag and nation legends and nation people.

  8. vasudha khare says:

According to me how can we decide we are good indian citizens. when we see the condition of our country , then we think we are not good citizen. In recently we can see the example of samefull work for our indian. this indian rape is such a very bad example. but all the people says that we are the good citizen. whenever all the indians will we good then we can , we are the good citizen…..
